# Pricing and access

> Choose who can watch a course (paid, free or invite only), set its price and currency, and give students access without a payment.

Every course has an access mode that decides who can watch it, and paid courses have a one-time price. You set both on the course's **Details** tab, under **Access**.

## Access modes

Under **Who can watch**, pick one:

| Mode | Label in the app | How students get in |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Paid | **Paid** — Students buy access | They buy the course on its course page. |
| Free | **Free** — Students sign up to enroll | They sign in or create an account, then click **Enroll for free**. |
| Invite only | **Invite only** — You add students | You add them by email. Nobody can buy or self-enroll. |

New courses start as **Paid** at 49.00 USD. Change this before or after you publish.

Lessons marked **Free preview** can be watched by anyone with the course link, in every mode. Everything else needs enrollment, whatever domain the course is on. A course link on its own never grants access.

## Set a price and currency

To set a price:

1. Open the course and click the **Details** tab.
2. Under **Access**, choose **Paid**.
3. Enter the **Price** and choose a **Currency**.
4. Click **Save course**.

- Supported currencies: USD, EUR, GBP, CAD and AUD. Each course has one currency.
- A paid course needs a price of at least 1.00. The maximum is 10,000.00.
- The price is a one-time purchase. Subscriptions, payment plans and bundles of several courses are not supported.
- Price and currency only apply to **Paid** courses. Free and invite-only courses ignore them.
- Owners and editors can change the price. Coupons and sales are owner-only (see [Coupons and sales](/docs/coupons-and-sales)).

Changing the price affects new checkouts only. Students who already bought keep their access, and a checkout already open keeps the price it started with.

## Before a paid course can be published

**Publish** stays disabled until these are true:

- The price is at least 1.00.
- Stripe is connected and accepting payments: "Connect Stripe in Settings → Payments to sell this course". See [Getting paid](/docs/getting-paid).
- The rest of the course is ready (lessons, videos, quizzes) and your plan has room for another published course. See [Plans and usage](/docs/plans-and-usage).

Free and invite-only courses don't need Stripe.

## What students see when they buy

On the course page, the purchase card shows the price and "One-time purchase. Watch at your own pace." If a sale or coupon applies, it shows the discounted price, the original price struck through, and the discount (see [Coupons and sales](/docs/coupons-and-sales)).

The buy flow:

1. The student clicks **Buy course**. If they aren't signed in, they sign in or create an account first ("You'll log in or create an account first.").
2. They go to a Stripe checkout page with their account email filled in, and pay there.
3. They come back to a page that says **Confirming your payment…** and refreshes on its own. Access starts only when Stripe confirms the payment, not when the browser returns.
4. Once confirmed, the page says **You're in!** with a **Start the course** button, and the student gets an email saying they now have access.

Good to know:

- If the student leaves checkout, they return to the course page and aren't charged. The page shows "A checkout is in progress" with a **Check status** link while that checkout is still open.
- Clicking **Buy course** again within about 30 minutes reopens the same checkout, so a student can't pay twice for one course.
- If checkout can't start, the student sees "Checkout is unavailable right now. You haven't been charged."
- A student who already has access sees "You already have access." and their progress instead of a price.
- A student whose access you removed can't buy the course again. They're told to contact you.
- If Stripe isn't ready, the card says "Sales are paused while [your workspace name] sets up payments. Check back soon." and there is no buy button.
- Checkout doesn't add sales tax or VAT. You are the seller; see [Getting paid](/docs/getting-paid).

## Free courses

The course page shows **Free** and an **Enroll for free** button. The student signs in or creates an account, then enrolls. Their progress is tracked from then on.

## Invite-only courses

The course page shows **Invite only** and says access is given by you. Students you've added sign in with the email address you used. Invite-only courses are always hidden from search engines.

## Give access without a payment

To give someone access to any course, including a paid one:

1. Open the course and click the **Students** tab.
2. Under **Add a student**, enter their **Email** (and optionally a **Name**).
3. Click **Give access**.

On a paid course this is complimentary access; no payment is taken. The student gets an email with a link to the course. If they don't have an account yet, one is created and the email's link signs them in (it expires in 7 days). In the student list, the source shows as **Manual** (or **Invite** on invite-only courses).

You can also give free access with a 100% coupon code that students redeem themselves. See [Coupons and sales](/docs/coupons-and-sales).

Owners and editors can add students. To remove access, open the student and click **Remove access**. See [Students](/docs/students).

## Limits

- One price and one currency per course.
- Price: 1.00 minimum, 10,000.00 maximum.
- No subscriptions, installment plans, bundles or tiered pricing.
- Unpublishing a course stops everyone, including enrolled students, from opening it until you publish again.
- A course that anyone has paid for can't be deleted. Unpublish it instead.
